Council Services

Greater Hume Shire covers an area of some 5,939 kms2, and has a population base of 10,206 people. An amalgamation of the former Culcairn Shire, the former Holbrook Shire (except for an area of 19.2 km2 transferred to the Tumbarumba Shire), and approximately 81 percent of the area of the former Hume Shire, the new Council was constituted by proclamation on 26th May 2004.

The Council Corporate and Community Services are located in the Holbrook office while the Environment and Planning and Engineering, (or technical services) are located in Culcairn. Customer Service Centres are located in Henty, Walla Walla and Jindera.

Council has Works Depots located at Culcairn, Holbrook and Jindera with sub depots at Henty and Walla Walla.

The Greater Hume Shire Council is now a ‘simply greater’ Council, committed to improving the lifestyle opportunities of residents and visitors alike.

Animals & Pets
Greater Hume Shire Council recognises the importance of having pets within the community and encourages residents to be responsible pet owners. Some larger animals such as horses, goats, or pigs are usually inappropriate for a residential environment and may be subject to Council by-laws.

Engineering Services
The Engineering Services Department of Greater Hume Shire is located in the Culcairn Office and is responsible for providing residents with a number of Council services throughout the Shire.

Waste & Recycling
Kerbside rubbish is collected weekly and recycling is collected fortnightly on the same day.
