Council Elections were last held on 13 September 2008, where the nine councillors were elected under a "wards" system. The current Mayor CR Denise Osborne was elected by the Councillors on 24 September 2008. Mayor, Cr Denise Osborne Denise has been an elected representative in local government for more than 20 years and has been the Greater Hume Shire Mayor since September 2006 having previously represented the Hume Shire before amalgamation.
Denise was presented with the Inaugural Award for Women in Local Government – Elected Representative Rural Council in recognition for her service to local government in 2008. Denise and husband Barry currently live in Jindera and have lived in the Shire for the past 26 years and have six children, 9 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Contact details Deputy Mayor, Cr John Ross John is a local farmer and has lived his entire life in the Henty/Cookardinia area and is heavily involved in a variety of activities around the Shire. As a Councillor, John has represented the Greater Hume Shire on a number of external committees covering areas as diverse as Noxious Weeds, Library services, Riverina Water and soft wood production. Completing a Diploma in Agriculture from Charles Sturt University, Joan went on to teach at Albury Tafe and has been involved in the education system in a variety of roles for many years. Joan was elected to Greater Hume Shire Council in September 2008. Contact details Cr Darryl Jacob, OAM Darryl was born and raised in the Shire, educated at St Paul’s College Walla Walla and Monash University and then worked in the family business of F.W. Jacob & Son.
Heavily involved in local sport and community activities, Darryl spends much of his spare time working to improve community facilities and amenities. He was named Hume Shire Citizen of the Year in 2000 and awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2007 Elected to Greater Hume Shire Council in September 2008, Darryl lives in Burrumbuttock with his wife and has two children and young grandchildren. Bill is a fourth generation farmer and resident of Mullengandra, who has been involved in local government in the region since 1962, serving as both Mayor and Deputy Mayor for several terms during that time. Living in Holbrook, John has been a councillor with Greater Hume Shire Council since March 2005. With considerable experience in financial and human resource management in both the public and private sector, John represents the Council on several community committees and has been a Councillor with Riverina Water for a number of years. A third generation resident of Jindera, Jenny is passionate about providing an environment where all members of the community are adequately catered for. Married with three children and three grandchildren, Jenny has been a teacher at St John's Lutheran School, Jindera for more than 20 years and has represented both Hume Shire and now Greater Hume Shire Council as a councillor since 2004. Ken and his wife Jan purchased the Culcairn Newsagency in 1994 after a career of 25 years with the Commonwealth Bank in New South Wales and 2 years in Papua New Guinea. With 2 daughters and 4 grandchildren, Ken is a member of Culcairn Lions Club and the Culcairn Community and Business Forum and has interests including photography, motor sports, gardening and reading. Originally elected to Culcairn Council in 2000, Ken has served with Greater Hume Shire Council in 2005. Involved in a number of community committees, Heather enjoys being actively involved in the community to ensure good representation for all residents. Greater Hume Shire was created on 26 May 2004. David Sexton, who had previously served as Chief Commissioner of Towong Shire in Victoria, was appointed Administrator, and Peter Veneris, the former General Manager of Hume Shire Council, became Interim General Manager. Mayoral elections were held on 16 March 2005.
