Council Elections were last held on 8 September 2012, where the nine councillors were elected under a "wards" system. The current Mayor CR Heather Wilton was elected by the Councillors on 19 September 2012. Cr Heather Wilton, Mayor Heather has a wealth of experience in local government and served a five year Ministerial Appointment with the NSW Local Government Grants Commission.
Involved in a number of community committees, Heather enjoys being actively involved in the community to ensure good representation for all residents. Heather lives with her family in Holbrook and was elected to Greater Hume Shire Council in September 2008. A 5th generation beef farmer, Stuart resides midway between Holbrook and Culcairn. Stuart has for 30 years been heavily involved with NSW Farmers at a local, state and federal level, as well as a previous member of the Pasturers Protection Board for 15 years, Landcare and Murray Catchment Authority. Living in Holbrook, John has been a councillor with Greater Hume Shire Council since March 2005. With considerable experience in financial and human resource management in both the public and private sector, John represents the Council on several community committees and has been a Councillor with Riverina Water for a number of years. Married with three children and three grandchildren, Jenny has been a teacher at St John's Lutheran School, Jindera for more than 20 years and has represented both Hume Shire and now Greater Hume Shire Council as a councillor since 2004. Denise was presented with the Inaugural Award for Women in Local Government – Elected Representative Rural Council in recognition for her service to local government in 2008 and her local government experiences have now been recognised and are illustrated in a permanent exhibit at the Museum of Australian Democracy Old Parliament House, Canberra. Cr Annette Schilg Annette is one of the five newly elected Councillors to join Greater Hume Shire in 2012, who lives on a rural property with her husband at Walbundrie, situated along the beautiful Billabong Creek.
Annette has a life long rural background, which includes working in the Public Health system for many years. A caring and passionate community member, Annette is actively involved in, and supports a variety of local committees. Has great pride and love for her blended family and six delightful grandchildren. Hobbies include ‘babysitting’,gardening,patchwork,family, friends and travel. Greater Hume Shire was created on 26 May 2004. David Sexton, who had previously served as Chief Commissioner of Towong Shire in Victoria, was appointed Administrator, and Peter Veneris, the former General Manager of Hume Shire Council, became Interim General Manager. Mayoral elections were held on 16 March 2005.
