Community Invited to Comment on Pedestrian and Bicycle Facilities in Greater Hume Shire Council Area

01 Dec 2009

Greater Hume Shire Council is currently seeking comments for a proposed five year Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan and new Cycle Ways Plan.

Director Engineering Greg Blackie today said that council will be undertaking an extensive community consultation process which will include meetings in the townships of Holbrook, Culcairn, Walla Walla, Jindera and Henty to identify the community’s needs in relation to bicycle facilities and pedestrian access.

“Following on from audits conducted in the five major towns in the shire, council is now seeking comments from the public as to areas they may find access to footpaths and other walkways difficult and also the most suitable location for bicycle paths in the shire,” Mr Blackie said.

“The audit report shows the need to complete works over several years to improve facilities for pedestrians including those who may be less mobile and also includes many improvements to existing pedestrian access points and bicycle facilities identified in council’s previous plan.”

Mr Blackie said that properly implemented pedestrian access and mobility plans can provide wide transportation, environmental and social benefits for the community including:
-          more appropriate pedestrian facilities
-          improved access for mobility impaired groups in the community including older people
-          safe and convenient crossing opportunities on major roads
-          reduced injuries to pedestrians

Mr Blackie said the five year cycle ways plan will be completed to promote cycling as a means of transport to improve the bike network, to improve personal and environmental health, to provide safer routes to and from schools and to improve safety.

“Council staff will be attending a number of community committee meetings in coming weeks to discuss the audits conducted and also to consider community input,” Mr Blackie said.

“Members of the community can submit suggestions for council to consider when developing the plan in writing to Greater Hume Shire Council, PO Box 99, Holbrook, NSW 2644.

Community questionnaire's have been developed, please click here to download a copy of either the Questionnaire for Residents - Cycleways and/or Questionnaire for Residents - Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP).

Mr Blackie said all comments will be considered if received before Monday 30 November 2009.

Council Seeking Business Input through Survey

14 Dec 2009

The Greater Hume Shire Council is encouraging local businesses to participate in a survey designed to support and encourage economic and business development.

General Manager, Steven Pinnuck said the purpose of the survey is to discover the barriers to survival and growth that face local businesses.

“The survey aims to formulate an up-to-date profile of the local economy, identify strengths and potential growth areas for local businesses, assist local business with solving problems and explore new employment opportunities in the region,” Mr Pinnuck said.

“Existing local businesses represent the engine for continuing economic activity and new jobs in our economy.

Economic Development Officer, Alicia Power said it is vital to have initiatives such as this survey that focus on listening to, and helping, businesses to do better.

“The ideas and issues raised through the survey process will be used by Council to develop appropriate programs and services for businesses.

“We have also included options for businesses if they would like to be contacted with more information about a particular program or service.

“It is crucial that we have a high participation rate in this survey if the results are to be of value to our business community,” Ms Power said.

A report covering the findings and recommendations of the survey will be published on the Greater Hume Shire Council website and will be available to all members of the community in hard copy on request.

Surveys have been distributed to businesses within the municipality and are also available at the Holbrook office (39 Young Street), Culcairn Office (40 Balfour Street) and the Customer Service Centres at Henty (30 Sladen Street), Jindera (Shop 8-9 Jindera Plaza, Urana Road) and Walla Walla (Commercial Street).

The survey is available to download here.

Completed surveys must be returned to the Council by Friday 11 December. All survey responses are strictly confidential.

Hume Highway Duplication

Hume Highway Duplication through Greater Hume Shire

The Australian and the New South Wales governments have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the Accelerated Southern Hume Duplication Package

The Hume Highway is the main road freight route between Sydney and Melbourne.

This package of works is scheduled to duplicate 67 kilometres of the Hume Highway in southern New South Wales by the end of 2009, leaving only 20 kilometres of highway as single carriageway.

The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) is proposing dual carriageway bypasses of   Holbrook and Woomargama to improve safety and transport efficiency.

Under AusLink, the National Land Transport Plan, the Australian Government is committed to upgrading the entire length of the Hume Highway to a four-lane divided carriageway by 2012. Construction of the bypasses is currently scheduled to commence during 2009/10.

The duplication of the Hume Highway will significantly improve road safety for all motorists and improve transport efficiency for communities and industries along this major freight route.
