The Greater Hume Shire has a rich a varied history and is an area worth visiting to discover our ‘simply greater’ history and heritage. Explorers Hume and Hovell were probably the first Europeans to see the area and travelled through parts of the Shire on their expedition south to Port Phillip, (Melbourne) in the early 1800’s. They noted the extensive grass cover in parts of the region and the potential for future grazing and development. But, before the arrival of European settlers to the area, it was thought to be the traditional home and hunting ground for the Wiradjuri Indigenous people who wandered over much of the region. After settlers began to arrive and make their homes throughout the region during the mid to late 1800’s, the region began to alter as large areas of farming land was established and groups of German settlers made the arduous trek from the Barossa Valley in South Australia to make a new life settling in both Walla Walla and Jindera. The Shire has abundant samples of the early settlers’ life and labour which is still evident within the museums and historical buildings throughout the Shire. Cobb & Co travelled between Wagga Wagga and Albury, changing horses in Morven, gold was discovered, bushrangers roamed at large and a new railway line was built which all had a profound impact on the life and times of the people and families who now call Greater Hume Shire home. Spend some time in Greater Hume Shire and you will be surprised at just how much there is to experience and explore or visit our Visitor Information Centre for more details. Why not spend some time and visit our ‘simply greater’ museums and really experience the history and heritage of the region for yourself. Museums
