What to do in Greater Hume in March

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful walking tracks in Greater Hume. Whether you are looking for an easy stroll paired with beautiful scenery, an informative walk that explores our history or total immersion into nature, Greater Hume has a track for you. So pack a picnic, a hat and some water and set off on a walking adventure.

Wirraminna Environmental Education Centre in Burrumbuttock, offers a beautiful walk surrounded by native vegetation. As you walk around the 4-hectare park, you will pass a large dam, wetlands, natural woodland and native garden beds. These features offer a great diversity of native plants and wildlife habitat found in Box-Gum grassy woodlands. The walk is also sign-posted so a great way to learn about our native environment as you get your steps up.

The Culcairn Bike and Walking Trail allows you to explore historic Culcairn as you walk or cycle your way through town. Visitors of all ages can embark on the entire 7km loop track, or there are plenty of opportunities to take on smaller sections. With plenty of rest spots along the way, and timber sleepers for seating, this trail will suit all levels of fitness.

Ian Geddes Bush Walk in Holbrook is a lovely 30-minute walk along the Ten Mile Creek which starts off at the Ten Mile Creek Gardens in the middle of town. You can find a map at the entrance to this easy walk, behind the Woolpack Inn Museum.

  Hume and Hovell Track, Woomargama

Up for more of a challenge? Why not take on the Hume & Hovell Walking TrackThe Hume and Hovell Walking Track is an iconic 426km route that follows Hume and Hovell's expedition of 1824–5. In our region the track starts at Coppabella Creek, heads back up to nearby Lankeys Creek then along the main Jingellic Road to Lankeys Creek campsite; ideal for an overnight stay. It will then take you through the beautiful Woomargama National Park, where you have plenty of picnic and camping areas and lookouts to take a break at. The track will then finish up out near our villages of Wymah and Bowna.

For more of a historical walk, you can walk the heritage trails of Burrumbuttock, Culcairn, Henty, Jindera, Walla Walla and Woomargama. Here you will explore the heritage buildings and reminisce on days gone by as you read the signs located around the towns and villages.

To reward yourself on getting your steps up, you can then take the opportunity to meet the locals of these towns or villages you are walking past. Stop for brunch, lunch or dinner and enjoy some country hospitality at one of the local cafes, pubs or restaurants or enjoy a spot of shopping at one of the many fantastic boutique or antique stores located in these communities.
