What to do in Greater Hume this March

Discover the natural wonders of Greater Hume through a myriad of picturesque walking tracks. Whether you crave a leisurely stroll amidst breathtaking scenery, a journey steeped in history, or an immersive experience in nature's embrace, Greater Hume offers an array of options to suit every adventurer.

Each trail promises a tapestry of sights, sounds, and stories waiting to be discovered, inviting you to enjoy the beauty of the natural world one step at a time.

Nestled in the tranquil surroundings of Burrumbuttock lies the Wirraminna Environmental Education Centre, boasting a captivating 4-hectare park adorned with native vegetation. Meander along the winding paths, passing by a serene dam, lush wetlands, and enchanting woodlands. Each step unveils a rich tapestry of Box-Gum grassy woodlands, teeming with diverse native plants and wildlife. Educational signposts along the way provide fascinating insights into the local environment, making it an enriching experience for all.

For those eager to explore the historic charm of Culcairn, the Culcairn Bike and Walking Trail offers the perfect blend of past and present. Embark on a leisurely 7-kilometer loop, or opt for shorter sections tailored to your preferences. Rest stops along the way with timber sleepers provide ample opportunities to pause, reflect, and soak in the timeless allure of the town.

Meanwhile, in the heart of Holbrook awaits the Ian Geddes Bush Walk, a lovely tranquil bushland walk that follows the Ten Mile Creek away from the main street. The entrance features a shelter with a map of the walk and all the names and pictures of the birds you are likely to observe along the trail. The walk can comfortably be completed in half an hour. Ian Geddes Bush Walk is located on the western Side of the Highway, behind Grimwood's Craft Shop and the Woolpack Inn Museum.

If something a little more extreme sounds like you, then venture beyond the beaten path and embark on the ultimate adventure along the Hume & Hovell Walking Track. This iconic 426km route traces the footsteps of Hume and Hovell's historic expedition of 1824–1825, weaving through the picturesque landscapes of our region. Begin your journey at Coppabella Creek, where the trail unfolds before you like a story waiting to be told. From there, experience the rugged terrain, going through Lankeys Creek and beyond along the main Jingellic Road. As dusk settles, find respite at the Lankeys Creek campsite, a perfect haven for an overnight stay beneath the stars. Continue your journey through the enchanting Woomargama National Park, where sprawling picnic areas, secluded camping spots, and panoramic lookouts beckon weary travellers. Pause amidst the tranquillity of nature, immersing yourself in the beauty that surrounds you, before venturing toward the villages of Wymah and Bowna, where your journey reaches its conclusion.

For those enchanted by the whispers of history, the heritage trails of Burrumbuttock, Culcairn, Henty, Jindera, Walla Walla, and Woomargama offer a glimpse into days gone by. Wander through time as you explore the quiet streets and heritage buildings, guided by informative signs that tell the tales of many years ago.

As the sun dips below the horizon and your steps lead you back to civilization, take a moment to indulge in the warmth of country hospitality. Pause for a well-deserved meal or a leisurely stroll through the charming streets, where local cafes, pubs, and restaurants offer a taste of regional flavors. And for those with an eye for treasures, peruse the quaint boutiques and antique stores that dot these communities, each offering a glimpse into the soul of Greater Hume.

So, whether you seek adventure along rugged trails or a journey through the annals of time, Greater Hume awaits with open arms, ready to enchant, inspire, and delight every step of the way.
