Author Visit - David Scott
Holbrook Library
13 September 2023, 10.30am

David’s historical autobiography, Stargazer, is of local interest and highlights the value of family, ingenuity, bravado, old-fashioned common sense, colourful characters and unfailing good humour. From rural towns in Victoria and New South Wales, to the mountain life in Queensland, his constant has been faithful canine companions, perseverance and a joy for living. In the 1940's, his father showed movies at Wodonga, Chiltern, and all the area army camps.

After the war the family shifted to Cobram, where David’s dad built his Melba Theatre, while also screening films at Numurkah, Tocumwal and Finley. In 1961, David oversaw the erection of the Lakeside drive-in theatre at Yarrawonga, and ten years later oversaw the construction of the Stargazer drive-in theatre at Albury. Ten years later, after selling to Village Theatres, he created a thoroughbred horse stud at Tabletop.

Around the turn of the century, a near-death experience saw his life change, and that's when he became an author.

His latest novel, set along the Murray River in the 50's and 60's, also contains historical fact that will be of interest to those who attend.

What to do in Greater Hume in September

The start of spring often means the weather is warming up, picnics and BBQs become the regular get together meals and we start to get final fever as the winter sports race to the final siren.

The start of spring also means its time to celebrate our dads and father figures as Fathers Day appears on our calendars once again! Greater Hume has all a father could ask for, so why not bring him out for an adventure this September.

If your father loves the outdoors then you are sure to win the favourite child award as you bring him out to Woomargama National Park, where his camping, hiking, and mountain biking needs will be exceeded. Spend a day within the park, pack a picnic, your hiking boots, and binoculars and enjoy the peace and quiet, the fresh air and quality time.

More of a fishing and boating outdoor guy? You can enjoy some quality time out on the water relaxing while waiting for the fish to bite at one of our great fishing spots in Greater Hume, like Billabong Creek, the Mighty Murray River or Lake Hume.

If your dad is more of a 'lets relax with a good pub meal' like mine is, we have you covered with that experience as well!

Treat dad to a special dinner and a cold one at one of our restaurants or pubs in Burrumbuttock, Culcairn, Gerogery, Henty, Holbrook, Jindera, Morven, Walbundrie, Walla Walla, and Woomargama. The country hospitality at any of these hotels will leave you feeling like a local in no time.

Another classic fathers day adventure is a great game of golf. Challenge your dad to a game at the Culcairn, Henty, Holbrook or Jindera golf course. Not to worry if lawn bowls is more dad's style, you can drive for the jack at the Culcairn, Henty, Holbrook or Walla Walla Bowling Clubs.

If dad is partial to a bit of history, take him on the ultimate day drive that is sure to make it in the history books!  Explore the history of the area through the various Museums located in Culcairn, Gerogery, Henty, Holbrook, Jindera and Wymah. These Museums showcase the varied and interesting history of Greater Hume, ranging from the pioneering history to an agricultural invention that revolutionised farming and even a submarine that found its final resting place in our region.
