Welcome to Spring in Greater Hume

Published on 03 September 2020

Spring is certainly in the air, the wattle and canola are blooming and it is a fantastic time to visit Greater Hume. COVID has kept us all close to home so there’s no better time to discover the local treasures.

Greater Hume Mayor, Cr Heather Wilton is encouraging locals and visitors to enjoy the beautiful weather and enjoy our great outdoors and experience our history and heritage.

Greater Hume Tourism and Promotions Officer, Kerrie Wise said, ‘why not put on your adventurers hat and head out to enjoy the fresh air and all that the surrounding landscape has to offer. Go four wheel driving, bird watching, mountain biking or hiking in Woomargama National Park, scale Morgan’s Lookout or book a tour of Table Top Mountain. Trace the steps of Hume & Hovell taking in the birdlife while enjoying a picnic at one of the many spots along the way.’

Cr Wilton recommended a visit to one of the many museums to soak up the rich history on display in our towns and villages. We have a number of curated displays, often located within their original settings, including examples of submariner life, railway heritage, agricultural innovations, Australian pottery, early pioneering life tracing our German heritage and even a Doll Museum.

Kerrie suggested that if retail therapy is more your thing? We have a great variety of retail stores including antique shops and 2nd hand vintage, homewares, jewellery, books, art galleries and craft stores. Perfect opportunities to pick up something as a gift, a weekend project or to treat yourself.

With rivers, creeks and wetlands – not to mention Lake Hume, Billabong Creek (accessible at Culcairn and Walbundrie) and the Murray River – our region is a major lure for anglers. Whether you like to cast your line from a tinny on a lake or a chair on a riverbank – or perhaps wading in for some fly fishing or yabbying – our ideal climate and heathy waterways provide abundant opportunities.

Kerrie recommended if you are looking to entertain the children or grandkids our towns have a variety of parks and playgrounds including some recently completed skate parks which are popular with locals and visitors alike.

There are lots of great paths for walking, roller skating or push bike riding and BBQ facilities to host that impromptu birthday party or get together.

For the sporty types there are golf courses, bowling greens, tennis courts and sports grounds throughout Greater Hume.

Kerrie advised whether you are planning a day trip or overnighter, Greater Hume has something for all the family.
