Australia is characterised by the prevalence of extreme events such as droughts, fires and floods. Unfortunately, climate change predictions are that extreme events are likely to be more frequent and severe into the future. While producers have considerable experience with such extreme events, they nonetheless cause considerable mental, physical and financial challenges.
Accordingly, there is a need to ensure that they are in the best position to prepare, respond and recover from such events.
Importantly, the recovery phrase in any extreme event not only represents a period for producers to try and return to normality as quickly as possible. It also provides a significant opportunity to consider how to improve preparedness, response and recovery plans into the future.
The Drought, fire and flood recovery guide is a sister guide to the Managing drought, fire and flood guide with the former focusing on recovery and the latter on preparedness and response.
The recovery guide is split into relevant chapters to help producers navigate the complexities of recovering from extreme weather events.
Through the Drought Ready and Resilient Fund, eligible primary producers can access a low interest loan up to $250,000 to help prepare for, manage and recover from drought.
The loan can be used for products, activities and services relating to animal welfare, farm preparedness, income diversification, environmental improvements as well as training and business development.
Applications are now open and will continue to be accepted until program funding is exhausted.
