Exhibition of Draft Bush Fire Mapping and Bush Fire Mapping Policy

Published on 01 May 2025

Greater Hume Shire Council, in collaboration with the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS), has updated the mapping of bush fire prone land across the Greater Hume Shire Local Government Area. The proposed 2025 mapping replaces the previous version adopted in 2011.

Under NSW legislation, all councils are required to map bush fire prone land in accordance with the NSW RFS Guide for Bush Fire Prone Land Mapping and Section 10.3 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979.

The updated mapping has been developed using the latest RFS guidelines and incorporates advice and input from Council. A significant feature of the updated mapping is the introduction of Vegetation Category 3, which identifies areas of medium bush fire risk. This category includes grasslands, freshwater wetlands, semi-arid woodlands, alpine complexes, and arid shrublands. The introduction of Category 3 vegetation acknowledges the bush fire risk associated with grasslands and farming areas used for curable crops such as wheat, canola, barley, and oats.

The Draft Bush Fire Prone Land Map and associated documents are available for public viewing and comment for a period of 28 days, from Thursday 1 May 2025 to Thursday 29 May 2025 on Council’s website and at Council’s offices at:
